Instructor: Mrs. Smith

Class policies: Be prompt!  If you get to class and the door is locked, you will need to go around to the office and get an admit slip.  You will not be admitted without an admit slip once class has begun and the classroom door is locked.

Course Description:  Students will utilize this course to develop their knowledge of, and skills in animal science.  Students will develop knowledge & skills pertaining to the selection, nutrition, reproduction, health and management of domestic animals with emphasis on cattle, sheep, swine, and horses; although cats and dogs will be briefly addressed.

 Course Goals:

1.            Understand how animal growth, development and environmental interactions impact animal production

2.            Understand  the impact of disease, parasites, and physiological disorders on animal health

3.            Demonstrate an understanding of animal behavior as it applies to animal care and use

4.            Understand the structure, significance, issues and trends affecting Animal Agriculture systems

5.            Explain the role of genetics and reproductive management in Animal Systems

6.            Describe the principles of nutrition and digestion and the role within an animal system

Each student is expected to:

1.       Remain on task throughout each class period.

2.       Make and keep a notebook which includes all classroom work

3.        Keep AET records & weekly journal entries up to date

3.       Bring a pen and a pencil to class everyday.

4.       Remain in the designated working areas throughout the class period.

Note – 10% of the overall grade involves SAE.  Each student will be required to have a valid SAE throughout the year. Grading is established based on completion of a record book turned in every month, evaluated based upon completion.

Note – 10% of the overall grade involves FFA Participation.  FFA is a critical curriculum element in ALL Agriculture Education courses and is taught within the classroom.  In order to identify each student’s learning related to leadership education, activities are planned outside seat-time.  These activities are graded; students will be evaluated on worth ethic, promptness, courteousness, communication skills, team working skills etc.

Just as rewards will be given for greatness in your future career, extra credit will always be given on superior work ethic. If you go above and beyond on FFA activities or work, there will always be an incentive for putting in extra effort.

Assignments, Quizzes, and Tests:

1.       If an assignment is given, there will always be a definite due date. For every day that it is late, the respective grade will be 10% less.

2.       Students will always be given the chance to make up assignments or quizzes that resulted in an undesirable grade, but to be done so on the students own time, not during class.

3.       Exam Material will be taken directly from your in-class work.

a.       You can use/access anything that’s been handed out in class, which has been placed in your notebook as a reference during an open-book exam;  Not all exams will be open book
